How to Draw Hair Step by Step Tutorial

drawing a hair

Hair is so different from each other that using the same technique for every type of hair would be impossible. Each type needs its own technique, and some are easier and simpler while others take a long time to do. If you enjoyed this tutorial on how to draw hair, you may also be interested in...

Step 2

This will allow you to get the fine details that are necessary to create a realistic look. Use a dark pencil to add shadows, and a light pencil to add highlights. The first step is to sketch the outline of the hair.

Add in the Details

So, using your pen of choice (we recommend a technical pen, like Sakura Pigma Microns), slowly go over the lines. If you want to add some variation to the hair texture, then try mixing up your pens with broader and finer types. Begin by drawing the outline of the outside of the hair. Notice the dark areas and the light areas in the hair.

Add Shadows and Highlights

The directional strokes that are used should flow along the form of each collection of hairs. With curly hair, the collections are smaller and more compact. Since the hair is curly, the directional strokes that we make for each "clump" should also curve just as the hair does. Make sure to fill it all and to make some of the curls noticeable outside of the hair shape.

Deliberate and confident marks work best for stray hairs. It doesn't have to be an exact copy of the subject, so don't put too much pressure on yourself to make it perfect. In the example below, a combination of graphite and white charcoal is used to develop the drawing. The drawing is completed on toned paper which makes the white charcoal applications stand out. The image below is from Portrait Drawing The Smart Way. Texture, like form, is also defined largely through the use of value.

Sketch the Outline of the Head

drawing a hair

Hair is affected by gravity and, on the contrary, on the top of the head, the hair on the sides falls down. The small volume it can have is because of bouncing with the ears. Use several short, curved strands to give it a bit more volume but keep it close to the head. On the sides of the hairline, add small soft lines to hint at the beginning of the hair.

We understand forms because of the manner in which light interacts and behaves on them. Therefore, we understand forms in a drawing through the use of value. The placement of dark and light values on a subject inform us of the intensity of light and the nature of the form.

Step One: Sketch the hairline

Do not approach the task with the idea that you should draw each strand individually. Instead, if you draw hear as one overall shape, then it only takes a few pen or pencil strokes to create a head of hair. Both a pencil and a pen can be used in this lesson on hairstyle drawing. We want to keep this concept in mind as we work through this lesson on how to draw realistic hair from beginning to end.

Another Example  - Step by Step

drawing a hair

This guide should help you learn how to draw realistic hair perfectly. Examining our reference image again, we want to notice all the little fine, wispy hairs on the head. With your pen, you may very softly sketch these little stray hairs. This is a fantastic technique to mimic the way hair behaves in nature.

Use quick, sharp strokes that go inside from the outside of the hair outline. As a result, the area of the hair that curves around the back of the head and receives less light will now appear darker. We can continue making soft lines that follow the kinks in the hair slowly and delicately. To mimic reality as closely as possible, constantly compare your artwork to the original image.

The structure of the head dictates the shape and flow of the hair and should be defined before we begin drawing the hair. When thinking about the hairline, we should think about steps. Hairlines are not straight lines or fully curved lines (unless you’re balding). Most hairlines have some sort of “steps” like shapes on the sides of the head.

On the other hand, straight hair has serene, calm, simple and maybe elegant lines. I am going to use the value scale to define details and give a 3D effect to the hair shapes. Let’s keep in mind that there is always space between strands and over layers of hair, which builds up to create volume. Afro-textured hair has a lot of curly strands and texture. Draw the direction of the hair, creating the 3D form of the haircut. In this case it will also be the outline of the whole haircut.

The perspective and angle of the head might make them look smaller or narrow. The below image includes hairstyles consisting of irregular layers and overlapping locks. If we only had the silhouette, we wouldn’t notice all these details, thus I need to contrast the different sections in order to highlight these shapes. Draw some strands on the side, too, to add some texture. Don't draw them as simple straight lines, but rather as narrow "Y" shapes (normal and upside down). Drawing hair takes practice, but with these step-by-step tutorials, you’re well on your way to creating beautiful and realistic drawings.

We'll draw the contour lines lightly and loosely with a harder and lighter, 2H pencil. We're careful not to place too much pressure on this harder pencil as this can lead to indenting in the surface of the paper. Assuming that the structure of the head is in place, the first step is to define the outer contour or outline of the hair. This includes the lines that are formed as the hair overlaps the forehead, portions of the face, and the shoulders. In many cases, the hair lifts off of the cranium and may overlap much of the face. Of course, every head of hair is different and the contours that are drawn at this stage will be different for every subject.

As you proceed, carefully and gently outline these different areas with your pencil. To make hair look shiny, you will need to add highlights. Use a lighter pencil to draw in some brighter areas. A mechanical pencil with a fine tip is best for drawing hair.

How to Draw Realistic Hair in 8 Steps

Starting at the hairline, sketch a line to indicate the parting of the hair (whether it is in the center or to the side). This can be anywhere (left, right, center), but it may help to look at a couple of photo references first. People are some of the most fascinating and difficult subjects to draw. From rendering the complexity of eyes to the shapes of lips, there are many different nuances involved. And, while facial features capture the likeness of a person, hair can say a lot about their personality and style. Once we have the main body of the hair developed, we can go back and add those stray hairs.

Straight and Wavy Hair for Women

Note that those areas are places where the light doesn’t hit directly or where the hair overlaps. Again, with your mechanical pencil or your 4B pencil, mark the hairline position very softly. Hair has always been present in art, being the common nightmare of the beginner artist.

And again, we can simplify this further into smaller shapes that describe the clumps. The four step approach that we explored above can also be used for a single lock of hair... For each layer of graphite that we apply, we'll use a blending stump to work the medium into the tooth or texture of the paper.

How to Draw Realistic Hair: A Comprehensive Guide

drawing a hair

If you want to create a shiny look or replicate harsh lighting, try to keep the highlights fairly clean. Click here to learn how to draw one from the front and here to draw one from side. Using the same rolling shapes as before, fill out the rest of the hair until you reach the back of the head. Next, sketch several thick, long locks of hair extending from the top of the head to the shoulders (or wherever you prefer). So again, we'll first define the outer contour of the shape of the hair.

Pick out a fine-tipped pen and trace all of the graphite lines. Once you're sure the ink has dried, erase any visible pencil marks. You may start by taking a photo of someone's hair - perhaps your own. Look for a defined collection hair that forms a shape. Any locations within the hair that need to be lighter can be rendered using an eraser.

For the top part, we are going to use loose “C” shapes, as shown in the diagram, following the direction of the arrows. For more fluid and dynamic hair, use three kinds of strokes. I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial on how to draw hair!

Simplifying the Complex and Creating Flow

Work your strokes inwards so they fade in the middle of the lock. In order to draw hair with flow, you need to be aware of the structure underneath. For long hairstyles in their resting state, the hair flows down, hugs the head and wraps around the shoulders. You want to begin by sketching the basic structure of the hair and keep your strokes loose and simple. Starting a little above the hairline (or forehead), draw large petal-like shapes to create the bangs. Don't be afraid to work the values to increase the contrast.

I’d recommend researching and practicing as much as possible. I might change my mind later on, but this stage allows me to see my hair ideas more clearly. Shade the whole haircut now, drawing curls all around.

I am using my kneaded eraser just as much as I use my pencil throughout this drawing. It's a fantastic tool for drawing hair because it can be used to pick out specific details, or to lighten larger areas of value. Watch this video tutorial on my three favorite kneaded eraser techniques for realistic drawing here. Over top of the drawing of the head add an outline of the main shape/shapes of the hair. At this stage don’t worry about getting every small hair clump but instead focus on it’s overall volume and large shapes that define the hairstyle.

Light values and dark values work together to inform us of the texture of the subject. High contrast between values with little transition or gradation often leads to the illusion of coarse texture. We know that locations within the hair that are closer to the light source or extend out from the head are likely to "catch" more light. Naturally, this results in an area of lighter value.

These lengthy, gentle strokes should closely follow the pencil lines. Remember to consult your reference image frequently. Up until the areas where volumes of overlap, we can continue in this manner. Keep in mind that until the hair merges with other clumps of hair, it is often exposed to light. Given the number of shadows in these areas, our drawing strokes will be darker.

Always bear in mind that the goal of drawing hair is to resemble the true quality of hair. A collection of lines that might be wavy, curly, straight, etc. are what comes to mind when we think of hair. We draw these by gradually adding deeper tones and shadows. Another crucial point to keep in mind is that the lines of the hair are thick where it is dark and thin when it is light. Then, as previously said, we want to carefully and delicately start applying the more gentle pen lines.

First, for drawing both female hair and male hair, we must define the hairline and areas of our character’s hair. Marking a reference point or a route which divides the hair can help us. From there, it becomes easier to see the direction that each section will take (2). Hair is a very important point of expression for our characters, so drawing hair exactly as we imagine it can be a real challenge. I try to break it down and think three-dimensionally and consider the volume and shape of the hair form with drawing hair.

It is this area that is particularly important to pay attention to,otherwise the hair won't look believable, or the skull may lookstrangely shaped. Nowthat I have drawn the face, I have all the values to compare to that Icould ever need. This is a good time to step back from the drawing, evaluate, and plan my next steps. Thisis where I will stop working on my block-in with line.

Both individuals were brought to the police station as persons of interest, and now investigators are trying to determine what "exactly occurred inside of the residence," Jennings said. After a "long standoff," Jennings said officers cleared the residence and took two people inside the home, including a 17-year-old, into custody for questioning. Jennings said it is believed that at least one of the two had fired on the officers.

The task force is made up of officers from multiple agencies. Marshals Task Force, were killed and four other officers were injured Monday after being shot while attempting to serve a warrant in Charlotte, North Carolina, authorities said. Four members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were also shot, one of whom died from his injuries on Monday night, the police said on social media. In the great outdoors, we have little control over when the sun hits and when it doesn’t. But in your own backyard, you have full control over how you choose to enjoy the open air. 31 pergola ideas to add shade, privacy, and style to your space

design pergolas

If you are looking to keep the elements out completely, this is the right structure for you. For rose lovers, a pergola offers the opportunity to expand your growing space. Forego the traditional design and use a series of arches, with a seating area in the middle. Imagine the fragrance surrounding you as you dine on summer evenings – a spectacular focal point for the garden. What's better for a wildlife lover than relaxing in your pergola as birds and bees feed around you? Cover your walls in flowering plants and make sure there's plenty of space for nesting birds, and then hang bird feeders, bee hotels and other wildlife habitats from the beams.

Use Contrasting Wood

Learning how to build a pergola isn't very challenging, and cheap pergola ideas are easy to come by. However, it's often the easiest and most cost-effective option to buy a kit. Bring the luxury of the indoors straight to your backyard with striking lighting fixtures and contemporary furniture. Plus, landscape designer Kate Anne went for a pergola with extra shape and pattern for another touch of elegance.

Elevate your outdoor space with Steel Shade Pergolas.

Like any outdoor structure, pergola design can range from affordable to crazy expensive. So it’s natural to wonder if a DIY patio pergola is the best pergola from your wallet’s point of view. Regardless of which structure you’re leaning toward, both maximize the use of a home’s outdoor space and can add value to your home. General consensus puts return on investment at somewhere between 50 and 80 percent, according to finance comparison site SuperMoney. That means that for every $1,000 you spend, $500 to $800 would be recouped when the house sells.

Mix Materials

Not only does a reed pergola exude a natural aesthetic that’s reminiscent of serene beach cabanas, but it’s also a sustainable choice. It’s the ultimate blend of form and function, offering shelter from the sun while still allowing those gentle breezes to filter through. For the men who believe that the devil is in the details, feast your eyes on the ornate pergola. No ordinary design will do; it’s time to embrace the elegance of patterns and the drama of a unique silhouette. Or if DIY isn't your trump card, choose the best hanging chair instead.

If the pergola is built close to the home, the rafters may run from the roof of the home to posts and columns on the outside as shown by the pergola outside the monastery in Crete. They offer shading for walkways, areas near pools, or other exposed outdoor locations. Pergolas provide basic protection for outdoor spaces used for cooking or dining. Finally, pergolas add an interesting element to outside space and can be placed at an entryway or along a building to add detail or can stand alone in a garden as a focal point. Pergolas can be installed along the length of a walkway and are known as pergola promenades.

This example uses only two posts, so it is what we call a cantilevered type. Because of its design, the width of the top is limited, but it does produce a cleaner, more open look as it only uses two posts. Vines and plants are already crawling on top of the trellis, providing the stone table & benches adequate shade during daytime. This design is unlike all the previous examples has it has a unique combination of materials made to blend in with the architectural finishes. Compared to wood, it is definitely more expensive, but it does compensate as it has a lower labor cost as they are easier to build. However, metal designs are generally more expensive and can be prone to heat expansion, depending on the type of metal you use.

Measure Your Soffits to Determine the DIY Pergola Column Centers

This isn’t just any traditional pergola; it’s a low-maintenance marvel that stays pristine and resists the elements. Imagine a clean, white structure framing your backyard, requiring little to no upkeep, and offering a sleek modern touch to any gathering. Fellas, have you ever wished for the power to control the sunlight streaming into your outdoor space? This innovative design takes pergola ideas to a new height of creativity. With adjustable slats, you can modulate just how much sunlight or shade you want at any given time.

It has a slightly raised wood deck flooring in maple, and a matching built-in bench for added sitting area. This inviting patio features a wood circular design with sitting area and a semi-circle planter with flowering plants. The round concrete patio is framed by grass and is large enough to make a great backyard entertaining spot.

Simple DIY Pergola Plan

design pergolas

The wildlife will flock to the space, where you'll get a great view of all the action. No matter what type of pergola you choose, you must make sure it withstands wind and other weather conditions. Most need a concrete foundation, which you sink the posts into to make the whole structure sturdy. Choose from dozens of options to create the exact pergola you’ve been looking for. Many require that pergolas be on concrete piers that extend below the frost line, which is how we have drawn the details in our drawings. For locations with zero frost depth, Appendix AH of the 2021 International Residential Code allows installation of patio covers on a minimum 3-1/2″ thickness concrete slab in some circumstances.

Wandering beneath the canopy of fragranced flowers and lush leaves is sure to bring a sense of joy. Pergolas can make beautiful additions to garden path ideas, especially when they're covered in clambering climbers. Statement furniture and bold color palettes are always a good choice for modern garden ideas, and this example is a case in point. A sleek grill, like the one in this set-up, is a great additional feature for alfresco entertaining. The smart pergola in this scene combines a mix of crisp white and warm wood finishes, which looks fantastic against a backdrop of porcelain wall cladding. The waterfall design fits perfectly amongst tropical-style planting, whilst offering multi-sensory benefits to the space.

However, nowadays they can be freestanding and include beams laid across one or more sides so plants can be grown to create shelter from wind if necessary. The basic structure remains, however, which is a square or rectangular frame made using posts and beams that support plants. One of the final touches when designing your own pergola is to select the style of your posts.

It is not known why this official chose to use this structure, but it has been suggested it was for protection from the harsh desert sunlight, but it may have been for beauty. Pergolas have traditionally been more popular in areas with hotter weather. The most common types of pergolas are freestanding pergolas, attached pergolas, and arched pergolas. Looking at this wood design, you will feel the heavy massing of its design.

'Also remember the taller the pergola the more unstable it may become and it may also be harder to maintain,' he adds. We like the sleek style of this one, plus it comes with an adjustable canopy so you can stay in control of how much sun you get. Love the idea of dining alfresco, but not so keen on your food being completely open to the elements? Use a pergola to protect food – and guests – from rain, wind and birds. If you opt for this approach, pairing it with neutral accessories is a reliable way to achieve a subtle yet sophisticated vibe. But, if you're after something a touch more playful, try combining the inky tone with a bold yellow hue.

Brighten it up with bold outdoor cushions, and run pops of color from top to bottom using bunting, colored fairy lights, and more. A pergola can be a great focal point in a garden and the perfect place to focus all your socializing too. Add a dining table idea underneath yours, complete with outdoor dining chairs, and string up the fairy lights, for ambient feasting and entertaining all season long and beyond... Pergolas are versatile and can be freestanding or attracted to structures such as homes. A pergola attached above a door or window is known as an arbor pergola.

This lush corner takes up some prime real estate overlooking Lake Geneva in Chopard Artistic Director and President Caroline Scheufele's garden. This pergola maximizes shade by extending into Saladino's pool without hiding the property's best views of Santa Ynez mountains. This Greco-Roman style pergola offers Mediterranean flair while still remaining as timeless as ancient Greek and Roman architecture itself.

Visit this 1818 home to see what life was like in California when it was still governed by Mexico. This is the oldest standing residence in the city, built by wealthy cattle rancher Francisco Avila, whose extensive 4,439-acre land grant covered much of Beverly Hills and the Miracle Mile district. Sometimes, she stopped by to choose two or three of the male customers to take home. In the 1930s, the building now known as Piazza del Sol, at 8439 Sunset Boulevard, was called the Hacienda Arms Apartments.

Its tenants included Jeanette MacDonald, Marie Dressler, and Loretta Young. It was also the headquarters of Hollywood’s most notorious brothel, the House of Francis. That much is clear as the women fret over their declining beauty and escalating debts, most of them owed to Madame (Noemie Lvovsky), a maternal businesswoman facing rent increases and aging regulars. Her ladies are luscious and her clients contented — she can provide boys on request — but the downside is still disease and danger, and the film shies away from neither. We never have a sense of where the rooms are in relation to one another. The girls like to move their wetted fingers on the rims of their champagne glasses to produce mournful music.

This 1921, Mayan-inflected Frank Lloyd Wright house was originally built as a “progressive theatrical community” space by activist and oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. Today it’s the centerpiece of Barnsdall Park and is open for tours during the park’s popular Friday night wine tasting events. Neutra was something of a control-freak as a designer—he made recommendations to his clients that included the ideal flowers to display, and would occasionally make unannounced visits to see how, exactly, people were living in his homes.

This remodel retains Neutra’s clarity of vision and is still a stunner. Today, this glass-walled paragon of modern design overlooking the Silver Lake Reservoir is an active part of LA’s design community and home to occasional art installations. Each Saturday, students in Cal Poly Pomona’s architecture program lead half-hour tours.

The guest house also provides free WiFi, free private parking and facilities for disabled guests. Master woodworker Sam Maloof and his carpenters designed and built this lovely, thoughtful home piece by piece in his on-site workshop; no two door openings are the same here, and each joint is a wonder of craftsmanship. A MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, Maloof has had his iconic rocking chairs shown at the Smithsonian; he also designed the chairs that were used on-camera at the history-changing Nixon/Kennedy debates. Visitors can see some of this furniture, as well as the wide-ranging collection of arts-and-craft pieces that he and his wife of 50 years, Alfreda, amassed together.

The house rules specify that the prostitutes remain on duty until the last client has gone home, but they can sleep as late as they wish. This is in a lazy dormitory, a separate private area. The women sleep three to a bed like sisters, eat together around the same jolly table on which they submit to medical examinations, bathe together, dress and groom one another, gossip and console. They lead comfortable lives and always look fashionable, not for their comfort but for the clients. Amazing staff everyone was very friendly and welcoming and the room service was really good. We were able to use the hotel cars and rent free for 4 hours a day which was very fun.

Styled in hardwood floors with a refined Tibetan rug, each room provides an iPod docking station and a 42-inch flat-screen TV. Select rooms offer a balcony and select rooms offer spacious spa bathtubs. A young charming man from a rich family has some fun with his dad’s mistress and gets kicked out of the family mansion in the countryside. He isn’t too excited to move until he comes across the maids in the house.

House of Pleasures movie review 2012

house of pleasure

After an almost ten-year run, Allen was arrested for pandering. It all happened very fast, in 1948, after her boyfriend shot a thief at the brothel. The House of Francis was run by its madam, Lee Francis, a former prostitute who came to Los Angeles by way of San Francisco and Reno. Trusting more to atmosphere than to plot, House of Pleasures offers a decadent portrait of the end of an era. Within its walls, fiction and reality, old and young, master and servant coexist; and if the Moody Blues' Nights in White Satin seems oddly perfect for the soundtrack, maybe it's because the song, like the film, is a nightmare disguised as a dream.

Which luxury hotels in Los Angeles are good for couples?

A “black book,” with the names of all the famous johns, was found. “Bizarre Los Angeles” has a post on Facebook about the following big Hollywood madam, Barrie Benson Lazes. She conducted her business at a 1514 Schuyler Road, a residence in Beverly Hills. The house was rented from actress Ann Dvorak, who apparently was unaware of the shenanigans going on in there. The code word to get in was ‘coffee,’ after her dog. Benson Lazes was married to Sam Lazes, gangster Mickey Cohen’s bodyguard, who was also involved in the business.

What are some of the best luxury hotels for stays in Los Angeles?

Even the newest recruit, a 16-year-old virgin seeking financial independence, soon catches on to her sisters' languid hopelessness. She now becomes "The Women Who Laughs," her face horribly disfigured behind a veil. Eventually, however, this man meets a gruesome fate. As the overhead and rent increase at L'Apollonide, Marie-France is forced out. She is not a cruel dictator, but remote and stately, gliding through rooms, softly issuing instructions.

Hairdressers and makeup experts were available in the basement, along with wardrobe people. MGM had a business account at the House of Francis – bills were paid by MGM executive Howard Strickling, one of the ‘fixers’ of Fleming’s book. MGM distributors were also entertained at the brothel when in town visiting for business. Fleming writes that MGM stars like Errol Flynn and John Gilbert were regular patrons.

No one, male or female, has any fun, but the men behave as if they do. They are all half-stupefied by the languor in which they drown. From tract homes to Case Study Houses, Southern California has always been at the forefront of residential home design (even Ice Cube knows it).

The garden, which he tended, and the house are both open for tours; if you ask, you might be able to peek into the workshop, where he continued building until his death in 2009 at the age of 93. From 1978, Madam Alex went international with her business. Most of the overseas clients were Saudi princes who would send the girls first-class plane tickets and lavish them with presents far beyond the $2,000 a day that was their rate.

Alex earned millions of tax-free dollars and acted as an informant for the police, protecting her business. Forst’s protégé, Brenda Allen, took her place as the next Hollywood madam after testifying against her. Allen’s advantage was her lover, LAPD Sergeant Elmer V. Jackson, who was also her business partner. A vacuum in the pleasure business was always filled. Almerdell Forrester, who called herself Ann Forst but was otherwise known as The Black Widow, took Francis’ place in that niche market of the city trade.

He was the one who decided on their profession, sending them off to MIT and then demanding they move out to Pasadena once they graduated. No word on whether he determined their style as well, but no matter who the progenitor, this graceful house originally built for one of the heirs of the Proctor & Gamble fortune remains one of the best examples of their work. However you decide to experience it, don’t miss the remarkable zig-zag staircase, a joyous element that adds a bit of fun to the perfection of the house. Bertrand Bonello's "House of Pleasures" is a morose elegy to the decline of a luxurious Parisian bordello, circa 1900, a closed world in which prostitutes and their clients glide like sleepwalkers through the motions of sex. Elegant and detailed production design creates L'Apollonide, a high-priced whorehouse on a respectable boulevard, where a madam and her women of commerce lead a life as cloistered as in a convent, or a prison.

Production-chief Irving Thalberg used to accompany them but he didn’t partake of the house’s offerings, presumably because of his weak heart. He sat in the lobby reading the papers while his friends amused themselves in the various rooms available for consensual secrets. All are almost immediately in a state of servitude. L'Apollonide charges them for room, board, clothing, everything.
